Create Change

My sister’s son became an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher in order to go to China and meet a Chinese woman he had been communicating with on the internet. They are now married and my sister, Jackie, is planning a trip to northern China to attend the ceremonial wedding. The couple plans to live in Canada in part because the bride wants lots of children, something that is not possible in today’s China.
According to the bride who has lived in China all her life, the killings related to the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 never happened. The Chinese press is heavily controlled and that is the official position. When I first heard this I thought, ‘How sad for this unfortunate Chinese girl who does not believe the truth and for the entire country where the media is controlled and the truth is repressed.’
Aren’t we fortunate to live in the free world where governments do not control the media and the media reports the truth. Who am I kidding? True; the government does not control the Western media but it is not free, not even close and it does not report the truth. Is there any difference between a government controlled media such as exists in China and a ruling elite controlled media such as exists in the Western world. None that I can think of.
Is there any difference between the bride’s disbelief of the Western world’s view of what happened in Tiananmen Square and the widespread disbelief of conspiracy theories in the Western world? None that I can think of. Both are the official position of the controlled media in which the person lives and both are widely believed by the general population.
Is there any difference between the bride’s insistence on supporting the government’s version of Tiananmen Square and my son’s insistent support for the charging of interest on debts? None that I can think of. Both are the pervasive and largely unopposed official position of the controlled media in which they live and both have widespread support from the population at large and especially from the ruling elite in their respective countries.
At times I despair at what looks to be large odds against making the kind of change I am targeting. The illusion of the ruling elite is so pervasive and their control seems so locked down and resilient. I look at what has become of promising beginnings like the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and the Tahrir Square protests earlier this year in Egypt and I see the ruling elite has somehow managed to retain control. Even Mandela’s peaceful revolt in South Africa and the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe have been co-opted by the ruling elite and twisted to serve their purposes. The ruling elite are very adept at winning the negotiations and at selling the illusion of freedom while serving their self interest and maintaining their power base.
And then I come full circle. Success in this arena does not come from attempts to shift the status quo timeline. Shifting existing timelines is playing the ruling elite’s game using the ruling elite’s rules. Success in this arena comes from creating an alternative timeline, a timeline of individual sovereignty and of realizing the full potential that exists within each of us. In that timeline, scarcity is seen to be an illusion and the folly of having a ruling elite is self evident. In that timeline heaven comes to earth.
Success in this arena comes from creating, not from protest, not from revolution. Success comes from creating a timeline for realizing our human potential and making that timeline available to all. Success comes from creating a timeline that others will naturally choose and the success of that timeline will cause the status quo timeline to become extinct. That is my choice. That is what occupies my time and my intentions.
